The annual Amarnath Yatra to the holy shrine of Lord Shiva, to the South Kashmir Himalayas, continues for two months from the month of July to the month of August. The responsibility of the yatra management and the decision of commencement and concluding dates are taken by the Amarnath Shrine Board; taking all the factors into concern.
The yatra begins on the auspicious occasion of Skanda Sashti and concludes on the occasion of Shravan Purnima. During this time of the year, the weather remains quite pleasant for the pilgrims. The area remains covered with snow for the rest of the year, thus cannot be visited during those months. The journey to Amarnath begins from Srinagar and Pahalgam and the trail continues till the Amarnath cave which is located at an altitude of 3,888 meters.
