Tungnath Opening Closing Date

Tungnath is the abode to the highest temple of Lord Shiva. Tungnath temple is just a 3.5 Km trek from Chopta, which is at an elevation of 2,700 mt. The temple is hard to access in winters due to the heavy snowfall. The altitude of the Tungnath temple is approx. 3,600 mt. As the temple is easy to access you don’t need a guide, except, in winters when the area is covered in snow.

The Tungnath temple is 1000 years old as is depicted by its artistic structure and architecture. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and also has idols of a few other gods like Goddess Parvati. This magnificent temple was discovered by Adi Shankaracharya, and now the priest of Tungnath is a local brahmin from the Makku village.

The symbolic idol of Lord Shiva is moved to Mukunath during winters, situated 19 km away. The trek to Mukunath goes through green meadows, rhododendron bushes, and rocky terrains showering us the beauty of nature. The energizing views of the Himalayas boost the hearts of the trekkers with confidence. Several named and unnamed peaks of the Himalayas can be seen from Tungnath.

Opening and Closing Dates

The opening and closing dates for 2023 are announced.
The doli of Shri Tungnath Ji will commence from Mukkunath and reach Tungnath temple through Chopta and Duggalbitta.
The closing date for 2023 was yet to be announced. The closing date of Tungnath is on the day of Vijayadashami/ Dusshera. In winters the doli of Shri Tungnath Ji is taken to Mukkumath.
