Situated at 3,658 at Bhyundar Valley, this beautiful valley sprawls over 87.50 square km, measuring 2km wide and 8km long.

Legends of the Valley of Flowers

In 1931, three mountaineers – Frank S. Smythe, R.L. Holdsworth, and Eric Shipton went astray from their path while descending from Mt. Kamet. The group reaches a valley that had a myriad of flowers and thus named it the valley of flowers.

The locals were always aware of the existence of the valley and believed that gods and fairies inhabit this place. As per, Hindu mythology the valley was created when gods showered flowers from heaven.

Valley of Flowers Travel Guide

Opening date: around June 1, 2021

Closing date: around October 31, 2021

Best time to visit June to August.

  • Initiate your journey from Ghangaria to have more time in your hands in the valley of flowers.
  • Entry to the valley starts at 7:00 am every day and the last entry is allowed till 2:00 pm.
  • Carry extra pairs of socks, raincoats/ponchos, torch, extra batteries for cameras.
  • Though the valley looks beautiful throughout the year but prefer visiting it in July and August for viewing maximum flowers.
  • Enquire about the quality of roads before making a trip in the monsoon seasons.
  • For the night stay, one will have to trek back to Govindghat or Ghangaria.
  • Exploring the valley of flowers takes around 7-8 hours, it is advisable to take packed refreshments along with you.

Main Attractions

1. Hemkund Sahib: One of the most revered and the highest Sikh shrines, located at an altitude of 4,329mts in Chamoli, Uttarakhand. The gurdwara got its name from the Hemkund glacial adjacent to the gurdwara. Hemkund means the ‘lake of snow’.

2. Ghangaria: This beautiful place snuggles in the lap of the Himalayas and is the last human settlement on the Bhyundar valley. It nestles in the confluence of River Hemganga and River Parvati.

3. Waterfalls: Trekking through the verdant hills covered with oak and pine, gushing rivulets, waterfalls, and of course, a plethora of flowers.

How to Reach the Valley of Flowers?

1. Reach from Delhi to Haridwar: via taxi or bus. To reach via plane, you need to reach Dehradoon airport first.

2. Haridwar to Joshimath/Auli/Govindghat: You can stay at any of these nearby places. The distance is around 275-300 km.

3. Auli/Ghangaria/Govindghat to Ghangaria: You need to first drive to Govindghat in case you are not staying there. From there to Pulna in a separate vehicle, own vehicles are not allowed. From Puna, it is a 10 km trek to Ghangaria.

4. Ghangaria to Valley of Flowers and back to Ghangaria: Full day trek of about 10-20 km, depending on how far you go. You need to be back by 5 pm as per forest rules.
