Amarnath Yatra via Baltal
The Amarnath Yatra route via Baltal is physically demanding. The route is shorter than the Pahalgam route, but with steeper terrain and a difficult path. You should be mentally and physically fit to attempt this route via Baltal. There are areas where you will have to traverse steep mountain terrain and high ridges. The path of this Amarnath Yatra via Baltal is
- Yatra route: Srinagar – Sonmarg – Baltal Base Camp – Domel – Barari Marg – Sangam – Amarnath Cave
- Distance: Srinagar to Baltal (93 km drive by road/2.5 hours) + 14 km one-way trek to the cave

Amarnath Yatra via Pahalgam
Amarnath Yatra from Pahalgam is more scenic and gradual in ascent. This is the traditional yatra route that a common tourist generally takes to reach Amarnath Cave Temple. The distance covered in this route is longer than the Baltal route, but is easier to cover. The route has facilities like tent/ camps, medical stations, dhaba kitchens (langars), ponies, and palkis. This is also the more popular route for the Amarnath Yatra.
- Yatra route: Srinagar – Pahalgam – Chandanwari – Pissu Top – Sheshnag – Panchtarni – Amarnath Cave
- Distance: Pahalgam to Chandanwari 16 km by road + 32 km trek from Chandanwari to the holy cave
- Helicopter services are available from Pahalgam helipad to Panchtarni.
Amarnath Yatra by Trek
The traditional Amarnath Yatra route is by trek and was used by devotees before the helicopter services began. This is a longer route, but more gradual, with an easy ascent. If you want to have the complete Amarnath Yatra tour experience, then you should book this Amarnath Yatra by Trek Package. The trek difficulty is low, and you can also get pony and palki services.
- Baltal Trek: 14 km one-way trek. The route is shorter but steeper than the Pahalgam route.
- Pahalgam Trek: 32 km one-way route from Chandanwari. Longer route but easier and more gradual.
- Trek Difficulty: Baltal route is more difficult than Pahalgam route. It has a moderate to strenuous difficulty level due to steep climbs, long distances, and high-altitude conditions.
- Approximate Distances: Baltal to Amarnath is 14 km, while Chandanwari to Holy Cave is about 32 km one way.
- Trek Preparation: We recommend that you build your stamina with regular walking and carry warm clothes, rain protection, trekking shoes, water, and essential medicines.
- Pony/Pithu/Palki: Ponies, pithus and palkis are available for pilgrims who need assistance during the trek and ease the trouble of walking on foot.

Amarnath Yatra Registration 2027
Registration for Amarnath Yatra is an essential requirement that every tourist has to complete. The registration for the yatra season 2027 is yet to be announced by Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board (SASB). However, the tentative dates for Amarnath Yatra are July 3, 2027 to August 17, 2027.
Amarnath Yatra Registration Process
Tourists have to register for Amarnath Yatra through the official website of Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board (https://jksasb.nic.in/). This can be done directly online through the website portal, or offline through the designated bank branches. Online registration involves payment of a small fee. You will get a yatra permit through the online process.
Documents Required
You will need to provide a Compulsory Health Certificate (CHC), a valid Photo ID, passport-size photographs, and an application form.
Compulsory Health Certificate
You have to get the CHC (Compulsory Health Certificate after getting medical tests done by an authorized doctor. You will have to undergo medical tests and a check-up for this process. Also you can check the website portal of Shri Amarnath Ji Shrine Board and look for the authorized doctors and medical institutions. The tests check blood pressure, oxygen saturation (SpO2), and physical fitness level.
Age and Medical Requirements
Pilgrims must be between 13 and 70/75 years old. Pregnant women who are more than 6 weeks pregnant are not allowed to go on the Amarnath Yatra. People suffering from asthma, heart conditions, or high blood pressure cannot go on this yatra.
Yatra Permit
Only the official website of Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board issues the Yatra Permit for Amarnath Yatra. You can get the Yatra Permit both online and offline. You have to choose the route you prefer to take, Baltal or Pahalgam. Also fill in the required travel date in the Application Form. Upload the necessary documents and passport-size photographs, and CHC (Compulsory Health Certificate). Pay the registration fee, which can be between Rs.150 and Rs.220. Verify the OTP via mobile and download the Yatra Registration Permit.

It is not confirmed as of now when the Amarnath Yatra season will start and end in 2027.

You can fly to Srinagar International Airport and then drive 100 kms to Baltal. From Jammu, you will have to cover a long distance, as it is 350 km away from Jammu. Jammu Tawi is the nearest railway station to Baltal.
How to Reach Pahalgam for Amarnath Yatra?
You can catch a flight to Srinagar International Airport, and then drive 90 km to Pahalgam. Anantnag Railway Station is the nearest local railway station. You will get many trains to Jammu Tawi Railway Station.
How to Reach from Srinagar Airport?
You will get regular flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad to Srinagar International Airport. The airport code of Srinagar International Airport is SXR. You can reach the airport in about 30 to 45 minutes from central Srinagar.
How to Reach from Jammu Railway Station?
You can hire a taxi or bus from Jammu Tawi Railway Station to Srinagar, Baltal, or Pahalgam. Jammu to Srinagar or Pahalgam is 270 km by road and takes 7-9 hours of driving. Jammu to Baltal is a longer distance of 350 km and takes 10-11 hours of driving.
Pony, Pithu and Palki Services
Many tourists prefer to take the pony or palkhi service to reach Amarnath shrine. This is done as they are tired of all the walking and trekking.
Pony Service
You will get direct pony service at base camps at Baltal or Pahalgam. Booking can also be done. One-way fare from Baltal to Amarnath Cave can be Rs.2800 to Rs.5000 depending on tariff rates set by Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board. Pahalgam to Amarnath Cave rates can be Rs.3500 to Rs.8500. Please note that these rates are not fixed and can fluctuate according to the season and availability.
Palki/Doli Service
A palkhi or doli is a palanquin-covered chair and is carried by four persons. Elderly people or senior citizens usually use them. Baltal to Amarnath rates are approximately Rs.12000 to Rs.17000 for round trips. From Chandanwari to Amarnath Cave, the rates are Rs.17000 to Rs.21000.
