The Kumbh Mela in Nashik (Maharashtra) takes place every 12 years along the sacred banks of the Godavari River, near the Kushavarta Kund. Nashik has the famous distinction of hosting the Kumbh Mela in India. This religious festival has been celebrated for centuries, and its history goes back to mythological times. The Nashik Kumbh Mela is so famous that it is one of the top pilgrimage destinations in India. Tourists and devotees converge in millions in Nashik to celebrate this festival. This will be a month-long celebration, which will take place in Nashik and Trimbakeshwar. These two places are located at a close distance from each other. Tourists normally visit both Nashik and Trimbakeshwar together in the same tour.
The Kumbh Mela in Nashik celebrates one mythological event. This event is known as Samudra Manthan from Hindu mythology. It so happened that the gods and demons churned the ocean to obtain the ‘pot of nectar’, also known as the Amrit Kumbh. Eventually, when the pot of nectar did emerge, the demons snatched it. But Lord Vishnu took the form of Mohini avatar and took the pot of nectar by trick. He flew with the pot of nectar, but some drops of the nectar fell on four places on Earth. Out of the four places, one of them was Nashik. The divine drops of nectar fell at the place called Ramkund in Nashik. This celestial event is the main reason behind the Nashik Kumbh Mela.
This Kumbh Mela is not just a religious festival, but a cultural showcase of India. If you want to experience spirituality and devotion, then there can be nothing better than the Nashik Kumbh Mela. The holy dip in Godavari is the main purpose for which tourists come to Nashik. This holy river is so special that it is regarded as the ‘Ganga of the South’.
