Yamunotri dham is located in the Uttarkashi district, at a height of 3,293 meters, on the western side of the Garhwal Himalayas. How to Reach Yamunotri

By Air: Avail the nearest Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun which is located at a distance of 195.6 kilometers from Yamunotri. You can book a cab or a taxi till Phool Chatti and from there, you need to follow a trek route via Janki Chatti to reach Yamunotri.

By Train: Go by train either to the Dehradun Railway Station or to the Rishikesh Railway Station. Hire a taxi, ride a bus, or book a cab from the railway station to reach Phool Chatti. You may also get shared jeeps or similar vehicles. From there, do a trek from Janki Chatti to Yamunotri which is about 5 kilometers.

By Road: It is considered as the best route to reach Yamunotri as it is well-connected to the roads of yamunotri, till Phool Chatti, via Dehradun and Barkot. However, if you plan to come by the Haridwar-Rishikesh route, then you will have to follow the Dharasu bifurcation point.

Yamunotri Trek Guide

The yamunotri trek route is compulsory and thus, cannot be switched with any other route. The trekking begins from Janki Chatti which takes around 6 kilometers to reach Yamunotri, that is, around two to three hours time. The trekking path is quite steep which make it difficult to walk, in the presence of beautiful lakes and streams, ample flora and fauna, snowy regions and dense forests. There are several facilities and amenities provide to the pilgrims with water supply, seatings, and resting spots. Small tea and coffee stalls for refreshments are also present at regular intervals for the comfort of the tourists.

  • Start your trek early in the morning to enjoy pleasant weather condition.
  • Carry a backpack with a road map, dry food items, raincoats or umbrellas, and first aid box.
  • Wear comfortable trekking clothes and gripping shoes.
  • Carry enough water with you to keep yourself hydrated.
  • Carry enough cash with you in case of any emergency.

  • Do not overpack your bag as it might slow down your trekking speed.
  • Do not pollute nature.

There are many restaurants and cafes which serve breakfasts, lunches, and, dinners through the Yamunotri travel route. You may also find several refreshment stalls of tea and coffee in the trekking route from Janku Chatti to Yamunotri.

Traveling Tips to Yamunotri

  • Carry ample extra clothing because frequent rains are common due to its hilly location.
  • Put the some dry foods and fruits too because the shops are not very frequent in the Yamunotri region.
  • Make sure you are carrying enough amount of cash with you because ATMs and card transactions are not quite common.
  • Do not forget to pack your warm clothes if you are traveling in October to March.
  • Check the opening and closing dates of the Yamunotri Temple before you do your bookings.
